Looking at Trees

Trees are big organisms that are easily overlooked, especially nowadays, where most people live in large towns and cities. Which means we may have forgotten about the importance of trees and woodlands.

 

Their impact on our surroundings is immense and is likely taken for granted. Only when we look back on old photos and films, do we realize their impact on us. So, by discovering the names of nearby and common trees, we can uncover all sorts of interesting facts, which can lead to action to protect and conserve woodlands for the future.

Identifying Trees

Tree or Shrub ?

Before you can identify your specimen you need to decide if your have a tree or a shrub. Trees are generally taller and can grow over 5 metres on a single stem while shrubs are usually smaller and have several stems.

Broadleaved Trees

Trees in this group have different sized and shaped flat leaves, but not thin needle or scaled leaves. Most of these are deciduous (leaves falling off in autumn)
